FLOOD RELIEF ACTIVITIES MCS AND SIGNALIANZ
The aim of this report is to shed light on our relief activities of MCS and its alumni , The Signalianz and raise awareness about a disaster which is worse then the Tsunami of 2004!
Relief efforts at the MCS are currently in full swing. The two pronged effort comprises collection of donations and relief goods at the MCS Campus, their packing and despatch to MCE Risalpur on one hand and on the other, the effort by the MCS alumni called Signalianz who have been mobilized in all provinces in Pakistan besides the support that they get from our alumni abroad.
From MCS over three truck loads have been despatched comprising food items (10 tons of flour and about half a ton each of ghee and Daal) and clothes (duly ironed and neatly packed in plastic bags as per sizes under the supervision of MCS Ladies). Two truck loads of rations will be despatched every week.
MCS is currently engaged in collection of medicines in coordination with the main Relief Camp at Risalpur. So far, medicines worth about Rs. 2,50,000/- have been arranged. These are the medicines of common illnesses, packed in cartons of 500 commercial packs each and have been delivered by the factory in Peshawar to MCE directly.
While most of the students at MCS are currently on summer vacations, Signalianz Alumni are truly making us proud. They are going ahead with their remarkably well coordinated relief efforts. Their enthusiasm is truly infectious. They launched the relief efforts immediately after the floods. Donations were collected from across the globe and Fadil Aleem (TCC-12) was made in charge of Relief Efforts. He has launched a small NGO along with his friends by the name of JAWAN. Fadil along with some other alumni members personally went to Swat and adjoining areas on 8th and 9th Aug and distributed food to 1200+ families which for them will last till 10th Ramazan.
An exciting addition this time was a large scale portable reverse osmosis filter (with generators for power supply) that the team took along with it. It can take mud water as input and generate 400 Gallons of 99.999% clean drinking water per 12 hours.
By the grace of Allah Signalianz Alumni have been able to raise more than Rs 52 lakh in just 10 days. In Round-1, basic food items (10kg flour, 5 kg rice, 2kg lentils, 2kg sugar and 1kg ghee) were provided to 1200 families in remote areas. Most distributed by hand, some sent to Matta area through heli and some sent deep into Shangla through mules with the help of Pak Army.
All the while fund-raising for Round-2 was aggressively going on and planning for Round-2 Southern Punjab was being done. As soon as the team came back from Swat region, a larger team left for Alipur/ Jatoi/ Kot Addu areas on 14 August 2010. They took their time surveying around to make sure they deliver by hand to the most needy. By 15th August they had distributed food items to around 2000 families in distress.
Round-3 fund-raising is in full swing. In the past 10 days, Signalianz have been able to raise more than Rupees 42 lakh which is no small feat.
We urge everyone to keep up this momentum and rise to the challenge posed by this calamity. Still lot of funds have to be generated and awareness has to be created amongst our friends and families. MCS and Signalianz will go for as many rounds as possible but it all depends upon your contributions and fund-raisers.
